Deaf-SELF South London playscheme opened their doors to excited children and youth for their October half term playscheme.
Cheryl Culver our playscheme coordinator tells us what went on last month at playscheme.
We had seven children that had started year 7 secondary school so they felt very grown up to be moved onto our youth group. This saw our youth group number bumped up to crazy twenty four!
We welcomed a new volunteer, Heidi. She was amazing and settled in really quickly. The children treated her like she has always been with us!
The week consisted of a trip to crazy golf, a visit to London Tombs experience, slime making and bowling, along with our Remark! North Playscheme youth group.
Sadly, it was also our last week with our lovely but mad interpreter, Ben. He is a CODA (Child of a Deaf Adult) and has a great understanding of Deaf culture, due to his growing up in the Deaf community as a child himself. This made him very popular amongst the kids of all ages.
We invited all the parents to our end of the year PowerPoint slide show and handed out certificates such as the most committed, the most fun, the most mischievous etc, to the children.
The week has gone so quickly and we can’t believe how it won’t be until February before we all get to meet up again!

Our ever-popular playscheme is for Deaf children aged 6 – 16 and runs in both North and South London during the school holidays (including half-term). Our Deaf playscheme offers a combination of in-venue activities such as sports, baking and crafts activities as well as day visits to adventure parks, trampolining, or wall-climbing. Every year we offer a wealth of new activities, to inspire participation and character building for each Deaf child who attends.
