An Adventure to Remember: Youth Leadership Project's Journey to Centre Parcs

September News Post

Our Youth Leadership Project (YLP), a dynamic initiative under Deaf-SELF, recently set out on an unforgettable adventure to Centre Parcs in the heart of Woburn Forest. What followed was nothing short of a resounding success full of exciting sports activities, skill-building, and a touch of unexpected drama!

The Youth Leadership Project is all about empowering young people aged 15 to 23. Through a combination of workshops, sports activities, and monthly excursions, we create an environment where growth and learning are paramount. Collaborating closely with Remark! Community, YLP is making a clear and tangible difference in the lives of young Deaf individuals. Upon arrival at Centre Parcs, the YLP group was divided into three self- sufficient lodges, with each lodge taking on the responsibility of cooking and cleaning for themselves, promoting teamwork and life skills development. The Centre Parcs trip was brimming with a variety of activities that catered to everyone's interests. From badminton to boating, bowling to crazy golf, table tennis, pool and swimming, there was never a dull moment! They even completed the prestigious Centre Parcs Cup, a testament to their competitive spirit and determination.

I really enjoyed learning sports and had such great fun” Konrad Sobon, 18.

This adventure wasn't just about having fun; it was a valuable learning experience. Navigating the vast expanse of Centre Parcs taught participants crucial life skills, from orienteering to time management. The responsibility of cooking and cleaning instilled a sense of independence and self-reliance.

“It was exhausting but the young people were amazing and took part in every activity. They learnt a lot of domestic skills too” Jessica Wilde, Chair of Deaf-SELF

Furthermore, the trip emphasised the importance of effective collaboration. Being in close quarters with fellow YLP members fostered a sense of togetherness, as they learned to work and communicate effectively. One of the most exciting outcomes of the trip was the discovery of new sports passions in activities like badminton. It certainty won’t be surprising if some participants go on to join our Deaf badminton club in the future!

“I am very keen to practice badminton and will join Remark!’s badminton club” Nathan Morgan, 18

Of course, no adventure is complete without a touch of drama. Whilst onthe tranquil Centre Parcs lake, one of our young people managed to unexpectedly capsize their rowing boat, leading to the unfortunate loss of both their wallet and their glasses! This added a rather memorable twist to the journey! And it certainly created lasting memories and laughter among the group. The Centre Parcs trip was a remarkable success for YLP and Deaf-SELF. It wasn't just a getaway; it was an opportunity for growth, skill-building, and forging lasting bonds. As the participants return home with new-found skills, hobbies and memories, it's clear that this adventure will leave an indelible mark on their lives.
