Empowering Our Lunch Clubs: A Workshop on Understanding and Addressing Depression

Members at all of our Lunch Clubs this January were delivered an involving and effective presentation on depression, delivered by the fantastic Ruth at SignHealth. Remark! Community and SignHealth have shared a close relationship for the past year; with members of all of our clubs benefiting greatly from their fantastic range of workshop content on the topic of health, relationships and wellbeing. The presentations this month were no exception; and our members were entranced throughout.

The presentation opened with a warm-up icebreaker, followed by a very moving video demonstrating that often people with depression seem "happy" on the outside, and don't reach out for support.

An presentation on an involving and effective topic, close to the hearts of many in the Deaf community.

Ruth then took the members through causes for depression, its symptoms, and the group brainstormed ways they could support a friend or family member who is struggling.

Members had an opportunity to ask questions, and some shared about their own personal experiences of depression and other mental health struggles, with the emphasis that people struggling are not alone, and finding friendship and community is so important for those going through a difficult time.

This topic is close to the hearts of many in the Deaf community, who are twice as likely to experience depression than hearing people, and the members were entranced and eager to learn about this area of mental health. We are looking forward to welcoming SignHealth back again, a fantastic charity with whom we are excited to continue a mutually beneficial relationship.
