Quali-Tea Workshop for Remarkable! Club

Remarkable! Club had a visit from Mia MacLaren; a Tea Taster at Tata Consumers manufacturers of tea products such as Tetley and TeaPigs; to deliver a presentation on the tea growing and buying process followed by a tea tasting.

MacLaren detailed the process tea undergoes before it is put in a teabag ready for us to buy, detailing how changes to the process impact flavour, colour, shape and size. Members got to see, smell and feel a variety of different tea leaves. Some in dust form, some loose leaves and pearls.

A demonstration on the correct method of tea slurping, from a professional, and members were ready for the tasting. We were informed that in tea tasting room, as staff can expect to taste over 500 teas in a single day (multiple days a week!) teas will be spat out instead of swallowed. However, we decided not to for our session. Members got to taste teas from Rwanda, Argentina, Malawi, China and Kenya. Throughout the tasting members recorded information on where the tea grew and the weather conditions there, then scored each tea on its flavour. Rwandan tea being the club favourite, by far!

All were in awe of the colour changing Kenyan tea, with just a squeeze of lemon it turned from a dark purple to a vibrant red. Unfortunately, despite it being famed for its colour it is also renowned for its bitter taste…

Remarkable! Club want to say a MASSIVE thank you to Mia MacLaren and Tata Consumers for their generosity in hosting such a hands-on and interesting session!
